Starting Solids

Recently, people have been asking me when I am going to start Sierra on solid foods now that we got the "ok" from the doctor.

The doctor has said that we can start solids any time now; but she said it was up to us. She said anytime between now and 6 months of age is a good time to start. She also recommended that we start "cup-training" as well (to teach her how to drink from that). However, I really would like to wait as long as possible to introduce all this new stuff, and here are my reasons why....

1) I LOVE nursing!!
2) Sierra and I (finally) have a good nursing relationship and all is going well.
3) Solid foods are messy and I am not very good with all that "yuck".
4) I don't want her to like food more and then stop nursing as much.
5) I want to wait till she is (mostly) sitting up on her own.
And....
6) I am good at making a lot of excuses and I really just need to pray about it!!! I am not very good with change and letting go of my little baby girl already. She is only 4 months and already so many "big girl" things!!

I guess we will see how it goes, but for all those inquiring minds out there....for now I am going to wait until she is at least 6 months.

I think 6 months (or later) is the perfect time to start! She's getting everything she needs from her mommy's milk now and introducing solids is a whole new ball game. Watch her to see if she starts to be interested in your food...that can be an indication that she's ready.
I was SOOO scared to start solids. It was very intimidating to me, but I can say that it wasn't that bad and can actually be quite fun!
Whatever you decide is the perfect decision for Sierra! :)
Love you!

Karen,
I am a friend of Katie's and I am enjoying reading your blog and watching Sierra grow. I can't believe she is already 4 months old.

I have an almost 3 week old and although this is baby number 2, I can't say nursing is going great. I would love to pick your brain. Clearly you are loving it, Sierra is doing great and boy do you have a supply!!

I will get your email address from Katie, if that is okay with you!

We are The V's on Katie's blog, check us out. Can't say we are awesome at posting, but working on it!

All of mine were 6 months or older when they started solids, and I didn't do rice cereal first... we did avocado. I even make some of my own, and I also do the frozen organic baby foods (Happy Baby). You SO do not need to start now. I waited until my kids showed interest in the foods that we were eating, so I knew they were ready. And none of my children changed their nursing habits after starting solids. All three of mine started on a "straw" cup at 6 months. They just drank water out of it, with their meals. Yup, even Mia drinks out of a cup. She will drink from a real cup too, if I just hold it for her. I think waiting until she sits up on her own a little better is a great idea!

For whatever reason, many people feel that children should be on solids as soon as possible. I'm just SO not on board that train. Let her determine when she is ready. I've heard between 6-8 months is the best time, and from my experience, that is very true! You are doing great, lil momma, go with your instincts, you'll be fine and so will she! :)

Kathryn was 6.5 months before we started her on solids. She was probably "ready" before then, but it didn't hurt her to wait. She was getting plenty of nutrition from breastmilk and growing quite well on that alone. However, once we started them, she did sleep better...! :)
