Our little pumpkin

I hope and pray that everyone has a fun and safe Halloween!

Thanks to Great Nana G. for the Pumpkin costume for our little "pumpkin" :)

As most of you know, I am not one that is big on the whole "ghosts, goblins, witches" thing.  If my Nana had not send the costume, Sierra probably would not have even "dressed up". As parents, God has given us the HUGE responsibility to teach our child (ultimately, His Child) the difference between worldly things and things that are pleasing to Him.  We are here to worship God alone, not idols or worldly things.  I posted some information last year in my Halloween post that I think is worth reading again.

As the little children come to your door tonight, please remember to pray for them.  Pray for their hearts, their souls, and their minds.  We live in a world where there is a lot of sin; but Jesus is the light of this world and He is the only one that can free us from darkness.

Tonight, as we did last year, we will be passing out candy with Bible verses attached and we will be in prayer for all of the little children around the world as they go "trick or treating".  We will also be praying for so many of you that will be passing out Church invites, Christian literature, and opening your church doors, parking lots, and fellowship halls, all in the hopes of bringing the Light of Christ to this dark world.  We are called to spread the good news of Christ and we will be praying as you do so.

We thank God daily for our little pumpkin and we are blessed by her presence in our lives.  We pray that she grows to know the love that God has for her and the debt that Jesus has paid to bring her out of darkness!  That one day, she too, will be a shining example of God's amazing love.

Be safe and have a blessed day!

"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12 (NIV)

"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV)

Sitting up

Again, more pictures that I took a while ago and have been meaning to post.  Sierra started sitting up on her own around 5 months and 3 weeks.  She is doing great now!  She will sit for extended periods of time and is able to catch her balance every now and again when she starts to teeter one way.  There have been a few times though where she has fallen over and I have been unable to catch her....I know, I know...I am a terrible mother!

The doctor was very impressed at her 6 month check-up.  She stated that most children do not have as good of balance as Sierra is exhibiting until closer to 7 months; so we of course, are very proud of a our little girl.  Especially since the kiddo is still not rolling both ways. :)  She is so unique and very laid-back, easy-going.  She is precious!  Enjoy the pictures!

8 Weeks down...

...8 more to go.

A beautiful picture of the Regent University campus at night

Praise God!  I made it through the first 8 weeks of classes!  It was definitely different trying to balance my school work and keeping up with Sierra full time; but we made it through.  I am thankful that I now only have 8 more weeks to go before a little break for Christmas.  I decided to be completely crazy and take 3 classes this upcoming session, instead of the normal 2.  We will see how that goes, classes begin today (Thursday).

I am happy to announce that my grades this past session were an A in Teaching Reading in the Elementary Grades and an A- in Fundamentals of Grammar - Giving me a 3.8 GPA for the session.

My upcoming classes are:
  • Earth Science
  • Foundations in Education (plus 15 hour in-class practicum)
  • Topics in Geometry for Teachers
Please continue to remember us in your prayers as we embark on another 8 weeks of classes.

Fun with the Kitty's

I took these pictures a while ago and I am just now getting around to posting them.  Sierra lately has become VERY interested in the cats.  When the cats walk by she gets very excited and starts to squeal.  If I ask her "where are your kitties?" or "what does the kitty say? - Meow..."  She gets very happy and excited.  It is very cute.

When the cats get close, she really wants to touch them and she reaches out to do so.  Our cats have never bitten or scratched anyone in a defensive way; but I am still cautious, because Sierra's way of "petting" is by grabbing a hold of their hair and not letting go.  I am consistently trying to teach her the word "gentle".  Hopefully as she grows she will learn this.  As for now, I am not sure that all the love Sierra has for the cats is shared by them, even though they do come up to her and rub on her every now and again.  Only time will tell!  As for now, they will just continue to be fun "toys" for her to look at and "chase".

Urgent Prayer Needed

I am sure many of you know or have heard of Pastor Rick Warren, most well-known by his book entitled, The Purpose Driven Life.  Pastor Rick leads a church out in California that my cousin's father attends.

While Daniel was ill in early 2006, Pastor Rick sent Daniel a signed copy of the book along with some encouraging words of prayer.  It was so meaningful to Daniel and I to know that a church (and more importantly, a famous author) would be thinking about little 'ole us here in Virginia.

Well, as you will read below, now it is our turn to repay the favor.  I am not a famous author and therefore have no fantastic books to send, but I am a child of God and I know He hears my prayers.  Please read what I have posted below from Pastor Rick and His family and please do lift them up in prayer as often as you can during the next few weeks and months.  As you will read, God is already working amidst their pain.

Thanks!
My life is a true testimony that prayer does work, especially amidst grieve and uncertainty.
Love to all!!!

Kay and I, and our entire family are deeply grateful for your prayers for Jaime and her battle with a brain tumor. Below is a brief report of this past week along with the scripture verse I've focused on each day. Thanks for sharing this burden with us. You might want to save these verses for when YOU need them.

SATURDAY
Jaime was hospitalized for blurred vision, instability, and headaches. A CT Scan revealed a massive tumor at the base of her brain.
"Lord, when doubts fill my mind, when my heart is in turmoil, quiet me and give me renewed hope and cheer."     Psalm 94:19 (Living)

SUNDAY
My 25 year old daughter-in-law, Jaime, (Josh's wife) is facing her second life-threateninghealth crisis in less than two months.  Seven weeks ago, Jaime went into labor five weeks early. They discovered the baby was in the breech position and an emergency C-section was ordered because the baby's heart rate began to drop.  Cole was not breathing when he was born, and it took great skill from the medical personnel to resuscitate him.

MONDAY
A day for testing. The MRI revealed a very serious and complex vascular tumor and hydrocephalus. There is debate about the type of tumor and much concern about the best procedure to use.
"God will shield you with his wings! They will shelter you. His faithful promises are your armor. Now you don't need to be afraid of the dark any more, nor fear the dangers of the day; nor dread the plagues of darkness, nor disasters in the morning."    Psalm 91:4-6 (Living)

TUESDAY
After getting 3 professional opinions on the nature of the tumor, we've moved Jaime to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The UCLA chief of neurosurgery has taken Jaime's case because of its risk and complexity. An angiogram today provided more information but because of the tumor's location and connection to vital blood supply, doctors are unable to perform a procedure they hoped to do before the surgery.
"The righteous do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them. They are confident and fearless and can face their foes triumphantly." Psalm 112:6-8 (NLT)

WEDNESDAY 10 AM
Jaime was just rolled into the operating room for her 16 hour brain surgery. We now know the premature birth and emergency C-section of Cole likely saved Jaime's life. She could have died pushing in a normal delivery. What we often think is a problem (at that moment) isoften a protection.
"Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord is the one who goes before you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor forsake you."  Deut. 31:8 (NLT)

WEDNESDAY NIGHT 11 PM
Hour 13 of Jaime's surgery. We are told the tumor is tangled with all of the nerves on the left side of her brain, pushing its way into the brain. We are praying that Jaime's life will be spared, the tumor will be successfully removed, and there will be no damage to her eyesight or permanent loss of movement.
"The prayer that is said with faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will heal that person."    James 5:15 (NCV)

THURSDAY 6 AM
After almost 20 hours, Jaime leaves the operating room. She'll now be in recovery for several hours. She may sleep for a couple of days due to the strong anesthesia given.
"When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you." Isaiah 43:2 (NLT)

THURSDAY 10:30 AM
VERY BAD NEWS. A post-op CT Scan shows that Jaime is bleeding internally and building pressure on her brain. This is life-threatening, so doctors must go back to the operating room, reopen the wound, find the cause of the bleeding, and stop it. This will take another 4 ½ hours.
"We do not know what to do, but we are looking to you for help." 2 Chron. 20:12 (NLT)

THURSDAY 3 PM
The second surgery stops two areas of internal bleeding. The doctor frankly discusses the possible long term damage.
"Lord, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will listen to their cries and comfort them. Psalm 10:17 (NLT)

THURSDAY 5 PM
Josh just got to see Jaime for the first time in 32 hours. It was only 30 seconds but she opened her eyes. She is on a breathing machine and can't speak but can move all four of her extremities. The next 24 hours will be extremely critical.  Our family is all worn out too.
Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 (NLT)

FRIDAY AM
Please pray that Jaime will have a full recovery, with no long-term complications. Pray that her life will be an example of the truth that God's purpose for our lives is greater than any problem we face. Pray the doctors and nurses will be touched by the witness of her life.

"If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." Matthew 21:22

"Pray that our Lord will make us strong and give us peace."  Psalm 29:11

"Pray for us that God will give us an opportunity to tell people his message." Colossians 4:3

"I pray that God will take care of all your needs with the wonderful blessings that come from Christ Jesus!"   Phil. 4:19

"As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you."  1 Samuel 12:23

The big "N"!!!

I am embarrassed to admit that we Miller's are still church shopping.  To keep admitting that, makes me wonder if we are just being too picky at this point.  It could also be because we have NOT been around at all this summer on the weekends.  I actually counted the other day and out of the 31 days in September, Sierra and I were only home 11 of those days, and most of them were weekdays because by the Grace of God, I only missed 1 day of class.  Brian has been going out "church shopping" without us a bunch this summer, but as most of you know, it is hard to make a united decision with only one person.

Well, just a couple weeks ago, I started attending a Wednesday night Bible Study with one of my friends and I absolutely love it (more on that to come).  I decided since I love the group so much and even am thinking about continuing with the next Wednesday night group as well; I thought I should try out the Sunday morning service.  I went to the service this Sunday (alone, because B was working) and I really enjoyed the service, of course we will have to go back when Brian can come too.  Well, for the first time EVER I put Sierra in the Nursery!!!

Since Sierra was born, we have always just kept her with us in the sanctuary during the service. Being so young, she has never really been disruptive and if she did either Brian or I would take her out quietly.  Well, here I was all by myself and my friend who I attend with Wednesday night kindly showed me where the nursery was and where Sierra would go on Sunday morning, etc.  I felt guilty and sort of obligated to put her in the nursery, although I know that was not my friend's intentions at all.  You all might think I am crazy for saying this, but all morning I had to talk myself into going to church.  I was so nervous, my stomach was in knots and I seriously thought I was going to get sick, just at the thought of leaving her all alone with strangers in the nursery.

Call her spoiled, call us crazy, whatever....but Sierra is 6 months old and she has never really been with any strangers.  Brian's Aunt Paula watches her every once in a while when B's work schedule and my class schedule don't align right and I wouldn't call her a "stranger"; and other than that, I don't usually go anywhere when Brian can't be home with her and he doesn't really go anywhere if I can't be home with her.  Of course we have our mommies group and we go to several things with them, but I am always within sight of Sierra; I was so worried about how she would do when she looked up and saw that I was gone.

Once I got there and got all signed in, they gave me a pager and told me she would be fine. They asked me where her bottle was and I politely told them that she does not have one and that I had just nursed her and she would not need to eat.  They said okay and quickly made a note about that on her paperwork.  Next, I said, please do not change her, she was just changed and should not need to be changed until later.  Again, call us crazy, but we really don't think it is necessary for anyone (aside from family and close friends) to change our daughter; even if they "mean well".  I think I need to be more stern about that request next time because as I was leaving the room, the head nursery lady told me that it is "mandatory" that they check the child and change the child before the parent returns to pick them up (and needless to say, they did change her diaper while I was at church).  I can appreciate that fact, but I am not going to be the mother that accuses them of letting my child sit in a poopy diaper all morning, I guess I need to be more clear about that.

So, I took my pager and I headed off to service.  At this point, my stomach was still in knots and I was doing much worse than Sierra, who as I lovingly kissed goodbye, just sat there and smiled as I walked away.  I was sure that the pager was going to vibrate in my pocket at some point during the service.  I made sure to sit in the back of the sanctuary and sit on the end of the row, so that I could hop up and run to her as soon as they paged me.  Well, I am sure God was doing some work in me, especially as I spent the first 20 minutes of worship in prayer that he would calm my pounding heart and keep my baby safe.  As the service went on and on, I realized, maybe this pager isn't going to go off after all, maybe she is having fun!

Indeed she did have fun!  She made it through the entire service, and more importantly, I made it through the entire service.  I don't know if I was more proud of her or of myself!  I was soooo happy to see her when the service was over though.  I quickly walked back to the nursery and saw her sitting in the exersaucer playing joyfully.  I picked her up and she gave me a huge smile and threw her hands around my face.  Maybe she did miss me just a little.  I am so thankful that she did well and that I was able to attend the service.  Worship was really good and I really got a lot out of the message.  I am glad that I didn't give in to the devil toying with my emotions earlier that morning; God knew that I needed that worship time and I am sure in her own way, Sierra needed that time in the nursery as well.  Ugh...she is growing so fast....what am I going to do when she goes to preschool???

Fun with Friends (Part 2)

On Sunday Sierra and I decided since the Bills were on a by this weekend, there was no point in sitting around the house all day (...unless a certain someone wanted to work on homework, and we know that wasn't the case...); so we ventured down to Sandbridge Beach.  Some of my very wonderful, beautiful friends from Richmond were in Sandbridge for the long holiday weekend.  I was so happy to see them and spend some time chatting and catching up.  My friend Susan was at the walk last weekend, so it was a joy to see her two weeks in a row!!!  My friend Crystal was also there and Crystal just recently gave birth to a little boy named Lucas.  In my slacking nature, I never did post these pictures of Sierra, Crystal, Lucas, and myself when we visited with them back in August just a few days after Luke was born.....

Obviously, Lucas has grown much bigger now and it was a wonderful blessing to be able to see them.  They were staying right on the bay in Sandbridge Beach and the house they were in was huge and gorgeous!!  I was so thankful to visit with them for several hours.  The time just goes by way too fast when you are with wonderful friends.  I so much wish we lived closer to each other.  I pray every day that soon the Lord will bring us back to the Richmond area.  I have many friends here in Virginia Beach (whom I love!), but nothing can replace those people that know me so well and have seen me through so many obstacles and joys.  It is hard to find friends that you share those special bonds with.  Girls - It was so wonderful to see you! I look forward to when we can get together again! :)

Here are some pictures of the kiddos...
It was a real photo shoot and I think the kids were shocked by all the flashes!
It looks like Sierra is telling Luke in this picture..."Look kid, there is no crying during photo shoots..."
Here we are....Mamas and Babies
Sierra (who lost her pants during our time there - I think I was going to change her and then got distracted and had to grab the camera), she was teaching Lucas how to blow raspberries with his tongue!
Sierra was very serious about eating Lucas' hand!

Fun with Friends (Part 1)

Brian worked all weekend, unfortunately...So, Sierra and I decided to find some fun things to do. (Of course, I should have been doing homework, but that is not much fun, for either of us)!

On Saturday we went to Hunt Club Farms with our friend Lettie, her mom, her niece, and her two kids.  We had fun walking around, going for a hayride, running through the pumpkins, petting the animals, and enjoying a beautiful fall day!  Sierra had her first encounter with some goats and I think she just thought they were big "Kitty's".  She loves the cats at home, so to her, these were just big cats, that's all!  A few times the goats got pretty close to her and it scared me; I think this kid is going to be fearless.

Here are some pictures of us feeding the goats...

Here's Lettie with her son Zach and her niece Elayna
This is Lettie's daughter, Bridget trying to catch a chicken...surprisingly enough, she caught at least 5 chickens, it was hilarious
