Happy Birthday Jenny!

Today is our very good friend, Jenny Robertson's birthday! (Well, at least for a few more minutes). We just wanted to give her a shout out. She is very loved and appreciated and we are so blessed to have her in our lives.

Unfortunately, because our house has been hit by the flu bug, we were unable to participate in the birthday dinner celebration tonight. We hope it was wonderful and you know how much we love you Jenny!

Happy 27th Birthday to you. We pray that God blesses you throughout 2008 and may all your dreams come true!

It Strikes Again...

The nasty flu strikes our house once again!

It must have been a combination of a busy weekend, not a lot of sleep, and lots of kisses and hugs from lots of people.

Brian was home from work today - in the bathroom most of yesterday, last night, and this morning. His temperature was 101.3 last night - Not fun! My fever was a bit concerning as it kept crawling up, instead of coming down. We called the midwifery center for some suggestions and finally sometime during the night the fever broke. Thankfully, Brian didn't get all the symptoms that I did, at least one of us is doing a little better. My fever has been coupled with sore throat, pounding headaches, vomiting, cough, and congestion.

I missed the breastfeeding class that was scheduled for last night. I had signed up for it and paid for it months ago. Of course, I am extremely disappointed about that. :( Tonight, Brian is attending birthing class with out me as well. The nasty flu bug going around this year is just horrible. As you pray for us, we will be praying that you all are able to steer clear of it. I talked to my mom today, and my Aunt Julie and cousins Rachel and Carrie (who were all here for the shower) have exactly the same symptoms that I do. Bummer!!!

I promise, as soon as I have enough energy to get off the couch and do something productive, I will be posting about the shower this weekend. Words can't even express how blessed we are and how loved Sierra is, already! The shower and the weekend with family was absolutely wonderful!

Thanks for the prayers!

34 Week Check-Up

This morning Brian and I went to the midwifery center for our 34 week check-up. I can't believe we are (almost) 34 weeks already. Soon we will be holding our little one and for some reason I don't feel very ready. We have no diapers, wipes, onesies, crib sheets or bedding, car seat, stroller...the list go on and on. Hopefully God will give us at least 4 more weeks before she comes so we can get on the ball with our preparations! :)

The little one is doing very well, her heartbeat was a strong 140 - 145 beats and as always she was very active. Our midwife, Erin, was trying to get her to calm down a bit so that she could get a good reading of her heart rate. Thankfully, she is still head down, we aren't really surprised though, I don't think she has much room in there to rotate anymore.

As for her Mama....my weight fell a disappointing 3 pounds!!! That news was followed by a 10 minute evaluation of my weight gain (or lack-thereof) and conversation about how I need to eat more snacks and higher calorie foods. My snacks now mainly consist of fruit, yogurt, low fat milk, water, etc. She suggested eating hard-boiled eggs, peanut butter crackers, apples w/ peanut butter, snacks after dinner...she even said I could eat ice cream occasionally. :)

The problem is I am just not that hungry! She did tell us that nutrition is much more important than what the scale says though, so that is a good thing! I just can't believe I lost 3 pounds....who loses weight in their last trimester??? She pulled up my weight history over the past 34 weeks and told us that in the past 13 weeks I have only put on 5 pounds. (FYI - a little later on after my physical exam, she informed us that the baby weighs 4.5 pounds approx. right now; essentially, it is all baby). She said because I started my pregnancy being overweight that they "expect" me to gain between 15 - 25 pounds. Of course my response was, "so I need to gain 15 pounds over the next 6 weeks???" (I can assure you that would be nearly impossible). She said, "No, I don't think you are going to make it." So, the goal is to try and add a few higher calorie snacks in during the day and at least maintain what weight gain I can for the next few weeks. Please pray with me about this and I would love any suggestions of healthy "high calorie" snacks you all could offer.

We go back in two and a half weeks for our 36 week check-up. We will get our Group B Strep test at that point; we are already hoping and praying that this will be negative.

Thank you for all your continued prayers! We appreciate them!
Lots of love to all!

Please Pray

I received news last night that a childhood friend of mine from Bergen, NY (and Brian's) - we all grew up together - suffered a seizure last Thursday. His fiancé was with him at home and called 911. That night they diagnosed him with a brain tumor. He is 27 years old. This past week he had brain surgery and is now at home. They are still awaiting the pathology report. I have been in touch with his fiancé and have offered to her anything that I possible can do.

Most of all right now though they need prayer - Please pray like you have never prayed before! This news has really cut deep into my heart. I went to bed thinking about them last night and I woke up thinking about them this morning. The greatest news is that God is always in control and because of Daniel's life and struggles; I have the ability to carry out that legacy and help others.

Please just pray, pray, pray!!! His name is Clint, her name is Amanda and they are special people to me and my family. There are not many home videos of me between the ages of 2 and 14 that don't include Clint in them.

Also, please remember to hug those you love and tell them you love them! In a second, life can change, none of us are guaranteed tomorrow.

I love all of you that read this blog on a daily basis! :)

Thank you!

My Sweet Valentine

It is well known in our house that neither of us have "gifts" as our primary love language. We usually don't buy Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, or other holiday gifts for one another. Instead we are card giving people! :) I love to get cards and so does Brian, so that is usually what we do on holidays. I think Brian and I have been exchanging cards back and forth for as long as I can remember. I have cards from him that date back to at least the early 90's and probably ones older than that, somewhere!

Needless to say, I was surprised when I opened my Valentine's day card from him and found a "gift" in there. But it wasn't an ordinary gift, it is actually the BEST gift of all - "A GIFT OF TIME"

It is so special to me and so creative of him...I wanted to share it all with you...

Now I have to decide when to redeem it, prenatal or postnatal???

Our Pregnancy....Our Decisions....

Okay, Okay…..So there has been some discussion sent my way regarding this post and why I am trying so hard to maintain as natural a pregnancy and birth as possible.

The only answer I really have is that I believe God created the miracle of life, He is the creator of our bodies; He has created my body to take care of, sustain, and at the end of it all (His timing of course), He has created my body to be able to do the work and “pop” this child out of my womb.

Don't get me wrong, I am NOT completely against the medical community. I do believe that God has given knowledge and information to doctors and nurses; I just don't believe that we should allow the doctors and the drug companies to lead us without our own research being done first. I believe that educating ourselves and making our own decisions for the health of our unborn babies is crucial in the long run. Also, it is my opinion that as Christians, especially, we MUST understand the Great Creator of life and the natural process He created for labor, delivery, birth, and the natural things (such as breastfeeding) that come along with that; without so quickly utilizing the man made remedies simply for ease and comfort; and although, I do say ease and comfort, I know that sometimes these "remedies" are necessary for health and safety and in times like that I am grateful to God for those provisions.

I realize that a Blog is a forum for people to write about their opinions and therefore, I should preface this by saying, that these are simply our opinions. Please understand that I am NOT in anyway saying that if you are a mother who took Tylenol, had an epidural, chose not to breastfeed, or underwent a C-Section that you are a bad mother. A friend of mine who I love dearly had to undergo an emergency C-Section because her baby was too large and got stuck in the birth canal; Of course, this was not her plan and having to have a c-section was a very emotional thing for her to overcome, yet it does not make her in anyway a bad mother. God has a plan and I know that His plan for Sierra’s birth is already set in place; but I continue to maintain that as pregnant women, we need to educate ourselves and be aware of all the things that affect our unborn children. Brian and I just want Sierra and our future children to have the best and healthiest beginning as possible. Agree or disagree with our tactics, you can’t fault us for wanting that!

Here are a few of my other thoughts regarding this topic….

I personally have done some research on many topics. I believe the research that says the "jury is still out" on what is and what isn't okay to put into our bodies during pregnancy. There is no concrete evidence that says Tylenol or any other medications for that matter are safe during pregnancy. I am still confused why people won’t drink caffeine or alcohol, or eat tuna fish, or do drugs during pregnancy, yet they will take cold medicine, anti-nausea meds, etc. Isn’t it one in the same? There is research that suggests that a viral infection carried by the mother (such as a cold or the flu) will not cross the womb. So to take a medication or a drug that has potential to cross the placenta, is not a risk that I am willing to take. In discussion with our midwife (who is a certified Nurse) she does not recommend taking any kind of medication for colds. She did advise me though, that if I come down with a fever, I would have to combat it with something (she suggested Tylenol), because a fever (especially a high fever - which I did not have) can cause problems for an unborn baby.

I am also a strong advocate for taking vitamins during pregnancy. I am not taking prenatal vitamins - I passed on those and got my own vitamins approved by our OB. I am taking a daily multi-vitamin called Double X - the brand is Nutrilite, which is one of the top ranked vitamin companies in the world (they use all organic plants). I am also taking an iron/folic acid supplement (also manufactured by Nutrilite) and a DHA supplement (also by Nutrilite). Recent studies suggest that taking a DHA supplement is as important for pregnant women (especially in later pregnancy when brain development is occurring most rapidly), if not more important than taking a folic acid supplement.

Of course, I can not know whether our decisions will have any effect on Sierra's development in the long run, but I am willing to be as safe as possible and I am willing to suffer through a cold if it means not passing any "medications/drugs" through the placenta to her. I also believe it is extremely important to drink lots of water and eat healthy foods; I do drink LOTS of water (and milk – something I crave!). I will admit that I have struggled with the eating SUPER healthy part. I do eat fruit, yogurt, cereals, proteins, but to be honest, the occasional Chick-fil-a nugget meal is thrown in there! :)

We are praying for a 100% natural childbirth - meaning a labor and delivery without drugs. Also, we are hoping to achieve other things as well, like NOT clamping the cord until it has completely stopped pulsating, providing skin to skin contact between me and the baby for at least the first 60 minutes of life before she is taken away (to help with bonding), breastfeeding exclusively, thoroughly researching vaccinations before Sierra gets them all, etc.

Some may call these things “weird” or “unconventional” but honestly these were the goals of many in years past, before the urging of the doctors to “get this baby out, so I can move onto the next delivery” and the pushing of the drug companies, so they can make a pretty penny.

Again, I will reiterate that I believe God already has a plan for how Sierra will enter this world, and if it is not how Brian and I had hoped, we will grieve together over that and we will cling to the knowledge that God is ALWAYS in control. However, we strongly believe that preparation is KEY and that is what these past 32 weeks (and going forward) have been all about!

These are just things we are passionate about. We understand that not all agree with us or understand our thought processes; if this is the case, I urge you to do your own research and make your own decisions. Ultimately that is the key to success, being strong in your own convictions.

We continue to covet your prayers for our natural childbirth decisions.

30 / 31 Week Check-up

So, I am super late on this post, I know! But just wanted to assure you that our 30/31 week check-up went fabulous! We saw the midwife for our check-up on Wednesday, January 30th.

I gained 3 pounds in 3 weeks - so that is perfect, 1 pound per week! I am now at 6 pounds total! My blood pressure and everything checked out perfectly and Sierra's little heart was strong and steady!

The best news of all though, was the news that our little girl had flipped into the correct position. She is finally head down! Thank God for prayers and for techniques like the ones on the Spinning Babies web site. Hopefully she will stay that way until it is time for her to make an appearance!

Because I am posting this so late, I can't believe we are 33 weeks pregnant today and we go back to see the midwife again this coming Tuesday. I promise to provide that update sooner! :)

For now though, we are introducing our 33 week (stretching) "bouncing ball" ...

Family Weekend

What a blessing it is to spend time with family! Last weekend (yes, I am a week late) Brian and I headed to Raleigh, NC to visit with my brother for his 24th!!! Birthday! Wow, our little Mikey is growing up so fast! :)

Mike and Blakely live in Raleigh; Kirsten, Keith, Katie, Shaun, and Pierce traveled from Charlottesville; Mom and Dad came from Richmond; Mr & Mrs Hunnings (Blakely's parents) traveled from Blacksburg; and Brian and I traveled from Virginia Beach. We all had a fabulous time hanging out, laughing, eating good food, playing with Pierce, relaxing, and celebrating the wonderful 24 years of life God has blessed Michael with!

Here are a few pictures and videos that we took of the weekend. Basically, how it went on Saturday afternoon was...Pierce went to the park...the paparazzi followed him...you will see what I mean! :)

We had fun sending Pierce down a slide for the first time ever - watch the slide show for the video of that! :)

Also, we took Rhea (Blakely's great dane "puppy") to the dog park, it was our first experience at a dog park; I loved it! Brian, on the other hand, said he saw enough dogs in one day to last him many years! :)

Next weekend, is going to be another great family weekend and lots of people that we love dearly will be in Richmond to celebrate the upcoming birth of our little girl! We are sooo excited and feel so blessed that many people are willing to travel for someone they love dearly and have never even met. :) I assure you that I am not completely naive and I know the good food and good people at the Stank household (especially our sweet little man, Pierce) is a bit of an incentive too! :)

Does Your Tongue Need Healing? (Chapter 5)

Chapter 5 - Diseases of the Tongue

Disease #1: Excessive Talking

Key Verse:

Proverbs 10:19 - "When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise." (NIV)

Key Thoughts:

When we say too much, we are bound to say something wrong. There is no alternative. Ecclesiastes 5:3 tells us that to use too many words is the mark of a fool. Also, James warns us in James 3:8, "No man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison." (NIV) James suggests that people who are always talking are restless people. Our contemporary culture is filled with them. Excessive talking can be a sure indication of someone whose heart is not at rest. (Prince, p 47)

Disease #2: Idol or Careless Words

Key Verse:

Matthew 12:36, Jesus says, "But I tell you that men will have to give account on the Day of Judgment for every careless word they have spoken." (NIV)

Key Thought:

If you don't mean, don't say it!

Disease #3: Gossip

Key Verse:

Leviticus 19:16 - Do not go about spreading slander among your people." (NIV)

Key Thoughts:

There are various requirements for access to God's presence, in order to "dwell on His holy hill." We must walk with integrity; we must work righteousness; we must speak the truth in our hearts. There are also three things listed that we should not do, we must not slander with our tongues, we must not do evil to our neighbor, and we must not take up a reproach or receive a reproach against our friends. It is not enough that we do not slander; we must not receive the slanderer as well. (51-52)

Disease #4 - Lying

Key Verses:

Proverbs 6:16-19 - "There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies, and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers." (NIV)

Proverbs 12:22 - "The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful." (NIV)

Key Thoughts:

It is important to note that in Proverbs 6, out of the seven things the Lord hates, three of them are related to the tongue.

Different opposites are brought to our attention in these verses, including "lying" and "truthful". The Scripture teaches that there is nothing in between. If it is not truthful, it is a lie. If it is a lie, the Lord detests it. If it is truthful, the Lord delights in it. (54)

Disease #5 - Flattery

Key Verse:

Psalm 12:1-3 - "Help, LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men. Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception. May the LORD cut off all flattering lips and every boastful tongue." (NIV)

Key Thoughts:

Too often we find ourselves speaking flattering words, but they are not sincere. There is another motive behind it. We must work hard not to lead or be led into a commitment or relationship that is outside the will of God. Proverbs 26:28 reminds us that "a flattering mouth works ruin." (NIV) (58-59)

Disease #6 - Hastiness of Speech

Key Verse:

Proverbs 29:20 - "Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him." (NIV)

Key Thoughts:

A provoked spirit causes us to speak unadvisedly with our lips, and these hasty words cost us many privileges and blessings. Moses spoke hastily to the children of Israel (see Numbers 20:7-12). Because of this, it cost him the privilege of leading the children of Israel into the Promised Land (see Psalm 106:32-33 KJV) Therefore, if Moses had to pay the price for one hasty statement, let us beware that we do not also say things hastily which will cost us dearly in the spiritual realm.

Coming up in Chapter 6: The Root of the Problem

The root of every problem affecting our tongues is in our hearts.

Does Your Tongue Need Healing? (Chapter 4)

Chapter 4 - Words Determine Destiny

Key Verse:

Numbers 13:30-31 - "And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. But the men that went up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we." (KJV)

Key Thoughts:

Men determine their own destinies by the way they use their tongues.

Take notice of the words in the verse from Numbers. Caleb said, "We are well able to overcome it." The other ten spies said, "We are not able." One set of spies said the positive: "We are able." The other set said the negative: "We are not able." If we continue to follow the story through the rest of the chapter in Numbers, we will see that each group got exactly what they said. Each ones' destiny was settled by their words. (Prince, p 37) The men that spoke negatively settled for death, and the men that spoke positively received life.

In the New Testament, we as Christians are warned that the same lesson applies to us. Hebrews 4:1-2 reads - "Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith." (NIV)

Consider this, when we face God's promise concerning a certain situation, what are we going to do with our tongues? Are we going to give assent to the promise of God? Are we going to identify ourselves with the promise of God and say, "God said it; I'm able." Or are we going to be one of those who say, "Nevertheless, look at all the problems, God said it, but somehow I don't feel able." (41 -42) Just as the spies settled their destinies with their tongues by the words that they spoke, so the same lesson applies to whoever has heard the gospel.

This is why...

This is why people in Virginia get sick so much, especially those that are pregnant with low immune systems. :)

I woke up this morning to head to my 1st grade classroom and my truck was covered by snow and ice!!! I could not believe it! Last week it was near 80 degrees and this morning while driving to school, it was 34 degrees.

Needless to mention, I got to school and shortly thereafter returned home, because VA is nothing like upstate NY and a dusting of snow and ice on your car calls for a 2-hour delay of classes! UGH ... to think, I could have slept in next to my hubby in our warm bed on Valentine's Day!

O'well! I returned home and Brian got up and made me coffee and breakfast! :) I guess I will try again tomorrow to get my observation in - I only need 1 more visit and then I can start working on my portfolio for Teaching Reading and Language Arts! :)

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO ALL!
It is our prayer that you feel God's love and blessings all day and always!

I broke down...

Brian and I went away to Raleigh this weekend for a great family visit (pictures and videos to come soon) and we got home just in time for me to get the FLU! NOT FUN!

I went to bed Sunday night, extremely uncomfortable, with an aching back and menstrual like cramps. I hardly slept all night and when I "awoke" (from what little sleep I got) on Monday morning; I didn't feel any better.

My body was attacked with diarrhea, headache, cough, sore throat, runny nose, achy body, and chills - pretty much all the symptoms of the Flu, according to the CDC. Around 8pm I decided to take my temperature, because I know that the virus can't hurt the baby who is still developing in my womb, the high core body temperature can. My temp was 99.4 - not too bad, so I decided to wait it out a little longer. By 10pm my head was hurting so bad and I still could not shake the chills, I took my temp again and at this point it was 100.4 - Brian and I decided that it was time to fight it off. I finally broke down...32 weeks of pregnancy later, to take 1-500 mg of Tylenol. I then went to bed, feeling too terrible to even be that disappointed in myself.

The more I think about it, I did what was actually best for our little one; which is always my goal. My fever broke sometime during the night and although I still have a pounding headache, feeling tired, loss of appetite, and a general overall YUCK - I am feeling a little better today. Hopefully I am finally on the upswing! I pray that I am and I am thankful for your prayers as well.

Update & Apology

Hello Hello Hello!

First I must apologize that we have been non-existent in the blog world for a little while. I always know when it is getting serious when I get a phone call from my Nana in NY to ask me if we are okay. She checks the blog regularly to keep up with us and make sure that everything is going okay and when I don't blog for a bit, she calls to check in. She called the other day to check in and I figured that was a clear indicator that our blog is lacking. :)

For those of you that have been praying, my cold is still hanging around. I thank you for your prayers and ask that you continue to do so. Our midwife did say it could last for 3 weeks, but I secretly was hoping that she was over exaggerating; possibly not as we are going on week 2 now. This may be too much information, but you just can't imagine how much green yucky stuff can come out of such a little nose. It is not fun, but bearable, thankfully.

Brian and I have been so busy, going, going, going. I recently joked and might have mentioned it on here that I think we actually need to have a baby in order for life to settle down. Those with small children already may disagree. Still, I can not wait for our little ones arrival. Sometimes I find myself during the day, sitting in the nursery, rocking in the glider, talking to her and thanking God for the miracle that she already is and the miracle she is going to be in this world. Brian and I can't wait to hold our little angel.

Until that day comes, I have much to blog about and next week will hopefully bring some time when I can do that.

Here are some upcoming posts:

  • Tuesday Night Birth Classes

Congratulations!!!

We have some very exciting news!!!!! Well, not really our news - but exciting none-the-less!

Brian and I are very excited to announce that we will be gaining a sister-in-law very soon!!! On Saturday morning, my little brother proposed to Blakely Hunnings on the Virginia Tech Campus in Blacksburg, Virginia (Blakely's hometown). She said YES (of course) - 1. who wouldn't want to marry my brother - he is a great catch! and 2. I know I am biased, but who wouldn't want to become a Stank? Our family is the greatest! :)

We are sooo excited to have Blakely as part of our family! Brian and I can't wait to see the beautiful ring (in person) this weekend during our family get-together in Raleigh, NC!

CONGRATULATIONS MIKE & BLAKELY!!!

We can't wait for another fun wedding!!!
We love you both so much!

Yuckiness

I have much to blog about, unfortunately, Tuesday morning I woke up with a yucky head cold. Wednesday brought early morning vomiting, severe sore throat, headache, and green yucky stuff! Besides being overwhelmed with school this week and many appointments, I have just been resting, eating soup, and drinking lots of fluids. Please pray that this yuckiness passes soon. In our attempt to maintain a 100% non-medicated pregnancy, I am not taking any drugs, I am just waiting for it to pass and hoping that is soon! Although our midwife has informed us that it takes about 3 weeks for a cold to completely get out of our systems.

I must share with you how much I LOVE my husband! Not that it was in question or anything - but I do LOVE him so very much. Over the past couple days, while he has been off work and could have been resting himself, he has taken such great care of me! He has gone to Wal-Mart, not only once, but twice to get me 2 humidifiers - one for upstairs and one for downstairs, Vicks vapors for the humidifier, and soup! He made me Chai for a breakfast drink yesterday and has been making me soup for lunch and dinner, whenever I want it. He has such a servants' heart and I love him so very very much! I have the BEST husband in the world! :)

Please pray for me as I continue to heal. I promise, once I am feeling better, I have lots to share! Including information about our 1st Birthing Class on Tuesday night and a recap of our 30/31 week check-up on Wednesday. Plus, I have great news to share about our little girl! :)

Thanks for the prayers. Lots of love to all our readers!

Does Your Tongue Need Healing? (Chapters 1-3)

As promised, here are my devotionals for Does Your Tongue Need Healing - Hope they are a blessing to you in some way or any other.

Chapter 1 - Death or Life?

Key Verse:

Proverbs 3:13 - "He who guards his lips, guards his soul, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin." (NIV)

Key Thoughts:

As we speak, we can either speak life or we can speak death. There is power in our tongues.

Consider this, God, the creator of the human head, designed it with 7 openings. (The number 7 is often used in Scripture to denote completeness) We have 3 pairs of openings - 2 eyes, 2 ears, and 2 nostrils. But He restricted the 7th opening to just ONE, the mouth! (Prince, p 5)

Do we use this ONE opening to speak mostly death into our lives and the lives of others, or do we seek to speak LIFE?

Chapter 2 - The Heart Overflows through the Mouth

Key Verse:

Matthew 12:33-37
"Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." (NIV)

Key Thoughts:

It is important to live out what Jesus teaches us in the verse quoted above. A good tree bears good fruit and a rotten tree bears bad fruit. Our words are very similar - Negative words and speech will not bring forth blessings, same as positive and encouraging words will produce that which is good.

If the heart is good, then out of the mouth will come words that are good. But if the heart is evil, then out of the mouth will come words that are evil...We may deceive ourselves about the state of our hearts with all sorts of ideas about our own goodness, purity, or righteousness, but the sure and unfailing indicator is what comes out of our mouths. God knows our hearts! (Prince, p 16-17)

Chapter 3 - The Biblical Picture of the Tongue

Key Verse:

James 1:26 - "If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless." (NIV)

Key Thoughts:

It does not matter how religious we may claim to be. We may attend church, sing praises, and do all the other things that are expected of religious people. In themselves, all those things are good. We may do all those things, but if we do not keep our tongues under control, our religion is worthless and unacceptable to God. (Prince, p 24)

As a sinner, I am definitely convicted of this. How many times as Christians do we speak about how much faith we have and our knowledge of Jesus being the same yesterday, today, and forever; yet in the next breath we speak something that completely lacks the faith we just proclaimed to have! This happens too often when sickness, or trails, or hard circumstances hit our lives; but it also occurs in simple daily life situations as well. I know I need to prayerfully keep a tighter rein on my tongue in these situations!

Does Your Tongue Need Healing?

One of the greatest blessings in my life is the fact that I attend a Christian University.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying there is anything wrong with secular institutions; however, given the option again, I would ALWAYS choose to be educated within a Christian environment.

The opportunity that I have been given to attend Regent, in my opinion, makes my degree so much more meaningful to me. After all, as Christians we are here on this earth to love and serve God in EVERYTHING we do, I feel blessed that even my higher education is being done in servitude towards my heavenly Father. Again, don't misunderstand what I am saying, I have attended a secular university as well and that experience was a great growing period for me. Also, my involvement in Campus Crusade for Christ was a huge opportunity for me to love and serve God and my campus.

At Regent, I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from other Christians, be educated by Christian professors and apply Biblical teaching throughout my curriculum. When I finally walk across that stage and receive my degree, to me, it will mean so much more. Not only will it signify my hard work and dedication to achieving my goals, but it will also stand as a testimony of God's amazing grace, love, and faithfulness in my life. All the glory will belong to Him!

Regent University's motto is "Christian Leadership to Change the World" and I LOVE being a part of that. I believe that is the calling on my life and God certainly has been revealing that to me often.

One of the greatest things about attending Regent is that in every class the professor selects a key scripture verse to go along with the subject matter. This small item built into our syllabus is so uplifting and encouraging. Not only does it provide Biblical encouragement to get me through the semester, but it also allows me to remember God's ultimate control over my life and my studies.

This semester in my "Teaching reading and language arts" class, we are doing a devotional for the first 15 minutes of every class. The book we are reading/studying is one that I highly recommend to EVERYONE out there! It is by Derek Prince and it is called "Does Your Tongue Need Healing"

For many that know me, especially my mother and co-workers at Advance, I am famous for reminding them to watch how they speak. Trust me, I am not perfect by any means, but specifically when Daniel was battling his illness, through our studies, God clearly spoke to us and reminded us how imperative it was to watch how we spoke and what we spoke. I started reminding others around me, by saying "don't speak that" so many times. It was a great blessing to help others guard their tongues as we were learning to guard ours as well. I am excited to be studying this book and diving into the Scripture revolving around guarding and healing our tongues yet again.

I have decided that each week I am going to post insights from our devotionals here on the blog. You would be amazed at how much time is spent throughout the Bible teaching about the power of our words. I have read books in the past about positive thinking, positive speaking, and the power of our tongues, but now I am excited to share with all of you how God is speaking to me through this book and our devotionals.

My partner is Jenny (of course!) :) and we have already covered Chapter 1 - "Death or Life" and Chapter 2 - "The Heart Overflows Through The Mouth"

Next week I will do a brief overview of those two chapters and share with you from Chapter 3 - "The Biblical Picture of the Tongue"

I will leave you with this for this week...
Proverbs 18:20-21 (NAS)

"With the fruit of a man's mouth his stomach will be satisfied;
He will be satisfied with the product of his lips.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit."

Blessings and love to each of you and may we ALL have clean, healthy tongues! :)
